Francis Benali to open new play area at Southampton Common
Thursday, 19 October 2017
Southampton-born Saints player Francis Benali will be cutting the ribbon of the new play area at Southampton Common at 12 noon on Sunday (October 22).
Alongside will be the Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton and Cabinet Member
for Environment & Transport, Councillor Jacqui Rayment.
Southampton Ukulele Jam will also be playing a set and entertaining the crowds starting at about 11.30am.
of the new play area began earlier this year following consultation
with residents, schools and community groups on how they would like the
space to be used.
The council says designers “took inspiration from
the natural landscape of the Southampton area and the patterns of the
Rivers Test and Itchen as they meander through the city, creating an
environment close to the city centre which enhances children’s
connection with nature”.
The play area features a 7.5 metre-high play
tower featuring rope bridges, tunnels, scramble nets and a long slide.
It also features two zip wires, a variety of swings and new active water
play installations for kids to enjoy 365 days a year.
