"Thank you for doing this website. It is really excellent. I live in Banister Park but consider myself very much also a Highfield/Portswood person as I have a lot of friends there and go shopping there and so on."

Mencaps Cafe Down the Lane crew in Portswood
A new café has opened in Portswood that not only supports local people with learning disabilities, but is also priced to encourage people on a limited income to visit regularly.

Mencap’s ‘Café Down the Lane’, which launched in January, is open on Wednesdays between 12pm and 3.30pm, and says it offers “scrumptious homemade snacks, delicious coffee or tea” and “famous signature scones” freshly made by apprentices.

The café, which is tucked away behind the main shops in Portswood, supports locals with learning disabilities gain real-world employment experience – and, Mencap says, “they are keen to serve you and demonstrate their skills” while offering food which is “excellent value for money”.

The hope is that people will use the café as a regular, accessible place to meet, and it places a particular focus on welcoming people with learning disabilities and their carers/support workers.

It's hoped it will also appeal to members of the public keen to just get out and meet some other local people.

For groups, there’s also the option to reserve a room for meetings while also enjoying the benefits of the café.

“Our apprentices look forward to serving you and we welcome you sharing this information with colleagues, friends and family,” says Mencap.

You can find the ‘Café Down the Lane’ on Wednesdays from noon until 3.30pm at Southampton Mencap, 187a Portswood Road, Southampton SO17 2NF – take the lane that runs behind Nat West Bank next to the post office, follow the sharp bend right and turn in to the second car park on the left, where there’s free parking for café customers.
