Friends of Portswood Library are appealing for funds to help send donated books to a children’s orphanage in Kenya.

kids receive their books in Kenya

The group has been collecting children’s books for the Teule Orphanage in Loitokitok, Kenya (the final day for book donations at the library is Friday, March 3), but now needs contributions towards shipping costs.

At the time of writing the group says it’s raised about £70, but the total shipping cost will be in excess of £200.

David Wardell, pictured, Friends of Portswood Library chair, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the quality and quantity of books generously donated this year.

“However, more books means higher shipping costs so any donations towards this would be much appreciated."

Teule Orphanage is in the southern part of the country, and a place where children come to from across Kenya.

Lucy Lawrenson teaching in Kenya

Writing about her experiences when she visited the orphanage last year, former St Annes student Lucy Lawrenson, pictured, said:

“What I heard only confirmed what the directors were always saying: these really were special children. The kids there were a family to each other, even those who had never before known the love of a family. They were kind, even those who had never before known kindness. And they were desperate to learn, so that they could improve their own lives and their community. They were the most inspiring individuals I have ever had the pleasure to meet.”

Donations towards shipping costs can be made at Portswood Library during usual opening times.
