Café and flats for Lloyds Bank building? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 February 2017
Plans have been submitted to create an additional two storeys for flats above the former Lloyds Bank building opposite Sainsbury’s in Portswood, while a change of use application is pending that could see the ground floor turned into a restaurant or café.

A planning application lodged with Southampton City Council requests permission to create eight flats, six one-bed and two two-bed, at the Portswood Road site.

Two of four resident objections published online at the time of writing are apparently from residents at next door Victoria Lodge, which provides 35 retirement and sheltered housing flats at 121-127 Highfield Lane.

Overdevelopment of the site, loss of light and privacy at Victoria Lodge, and issues about a fire escape are some of the concerns noted, which are here.

Meanwhile a separate planning application to potentially turn the former bank into a restaurant or café is, according to the council's planning portal, awaiting a decision – and has met with several objections - again with some coming from residents from nearby Victoria Lodge. They include concerns about the possible smell from extractor fans, noise from possible late night opening, and bin collection storage and arrangements.

The existing building was apparently “locally listed” in 1998. It closed as a Lloyds branch in August 2015, leaving Nat West as the only ‘big four’ bank represented in Portswood.

Portswood’s Nat West subsequently reduced its opening hours to four a day from July 2016.
