Staff say bakery chain Greggs is pulling out of Portswood from September.
It’s understood the store will close on Saturday (September 3), when the lease expires.
Rising rent and rates are said to be a significant factor.
reported, just along the road, sweet shop The Sweet Bar is holding a
closing down sale and also expected to close by early September.
Fagan, who runs nearby shoe repair and luggage store Fagans, said that
while his shop wasn’t going anywhere, and it had more time to run on its
lease, Portswood had been really quiet lately – even given student
holidays and hot weather.
“Portswood’s not like it used to be. It
just seems to be a lot quieter the last couple of months. You don’t see
the people about half the time. I’ve got a friend who runs a shop in
Westbourne and he says it’s exactly the same, so I think it’s not just
here, but it’s the same in most places.”
But he said he thought Greggs was quite busy: “You always see people going past with Greggs bags,” he said.
staff say they will be redeployed within the business. Greggs head
office spokespeople didn’t respond to requests to confirm or comment by publication time.
