Peacocks feels the pinch
Peacocks PortswoodClothing retailer Peacocks has entered administration and is reported to be seeking a buyer. A notice in the Portswood store says administrators at KPMG are now managing the business. Alongside this a second notice asks people to "help save" 10,000 jobs, via a Facebook page.

Talking Heads: 'talks with potential investor'
ImageThe 'Save our Heads' Facebook page reports that "initial talks with 'an interested potential investor" have taken place, the outcome of which is 'promising'. As it stands (we understand) there is still lots to do before a new person takes over. However, we are very optimistic that we'll all be hearing some good news soon." Over 4,000 people have now 'liked' the Facebook page.

portswood post office signA planning application, contested by Highfield Residents’ Association, has been lodged to change the use of the premises adjacent to Portswood Post Office, so they can be used by an estate agency. Elliotts Estate Agents opened in the unit some weeks ago.
 
Abbotts Way parking permits
Rich Stokes writes to ask about parking permits: "Abbotts Way is currently being painted up for 'resident only' parking, despite the fact that it's populated entirely by houses with off-road parking. I live on Portswood Road and have nowhere else to park. Now I'm being told I don't qualify for a parking permit!" he says.
 
How do you do a ‘community buyout’ anyway?
Graham MitchellWhether a ‘community buyout’, which has been mooted on social media, is a real possibility in the case of Talking Heads is unknown. But we asked ‘old Sotonian’ Graham Mitchell (pictured), who was recently part of a group which set up a community-owned greengrocer when the previous business failed, to explain what a community buyout actually is, and what’s involved in doing one.

As Talking Heads starts disposing of pub furniture, there's an interesting glimpse into the venue’s history as the Red Lion pub, which apparently hosted music since at least the 50s, over on the Music Heritage site.

 
Sainsbury’s: extended hours & petrol station objection
vintage petrol pumpFurther to our story in December, Highfield Residents’ Association has objected to Sainsbury’s planning application, which seeks to extend the store’s opening hours from 7am-11pm Monday to Saturday, and from 9-5 on Sundays, as well as its plan to build a petrol station on St Denys Road.
